Philadelphia – Drexel women's lacrosse dropped a 14-9 decision to sixth-ranked James Madison in the first Colonial Athletic Association game played at the Dragons' Vidas Field this season. The Dragons pulled to within 10-9 with just under 14 minutes remaining but the Dukes regrouped to score the last four goals of the game to secure the victory. Drexel's Emily Hoesch (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) had her 46-game goal scoring streak snapped as she was held without a point. It was the second-longest active streak in the nation. Annie Wagner led the Dukes (10-2, 3-0 CAA) with five goals while Drexel (9-4, 1-3 CAA) junior Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored four.
The first half featured back-and-forth action as neither team could pull away. The Dragons opened the scoring on a free-position goal from Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield). The Dukes responded with a pair before Bill scored her first of the day on a restart after an offside call on James Madison. Kerry Kelly (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) gave Drexel its last lead of the day as she followed Bill's goal with a score after racing in from the top to outmaneuver two defenders. The lead was short-lived as Wagner scored on an assist from Natasha Fuchs then Lynlea Cronin came off the bench to score the go-ahead goal. Bill tied the game on a goal that was assisted by Keegan after a restart in the Dukes' end, but James Madison's Emily Haller scored just 19 seconds later. Bill responded with her third goal of the game with 6:21 remaining in the first period to knot the score again. The Dukes would get the upper hand going into halftime, however, as Wagner tacked on two more goals including the last of the half with just 14 seconds remaining to give James Madison a 7-5 lead going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Dragons scored the first goal with Kelly scoring after receiving a pass from Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). The Dukes responded with three goals, including the last two from Maria Bosica to take their biggest lead of the game at 10-6. The Dragons looked to regroup as Head Coach Anna Marie Vesco called timeout. Less than a minute later, Drexel roared back as Bill tallied her fourth of the game and Katie Bradley followed with a goal from the top on a one-on-one move to bring the Dragons to within two goals. With 13:53 remaining, Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a free-position shot to cut the Dukes' lead in half and force a timeout from James Madison. The Dragons would get no closer as James Madison scored the final three goals to earn its third conference victory.
For the game, Drexel outshot the sixth-ranked Dukes, 30-21, but James Madison made eight saves to the Dragons' one.
The Dragons return to the field on Sunday, April 15 for another home CAA game as Drexel hosts George Mason at 1:00 p.m.
